About Crafty Girl Maria

Crafty girl sewing

I have loved being creative ever since I remember. I grew up in the 70s and was encouraged by my mum to try anything creative. She was an amazing cook and seamstress, and taught me how to bake, sew, and knit.

A few years ago I made a few onesies for my children's teddies, which developed into making and selling them on eBay in my spare time. I was always making my own curtains, blinds and small items for around the home and then a few friends asked me to teach them to sew. I then created a campervan sewing machine cover and decided to sell the pattern for it on Etsy in 2019. I worked for myself (as a hypnotherapist) at the time and I would spend any spare time creating new patterns and was so excited when I made a sale. At around the same time, a friend of mine asked (told!) me to make her a dress, which I pooh-poohed at the time saying I couldn't make clothes. I gave in and made it and was totally hooked! I now have a huge stash of fabrics and sewing patterns.

I have had RSI for many years (which causes arm and hand pain), so have to limit the amount of sewing I do. I also find it boring making the same thing more than once, so I knew I didn't want to (and couldn't) make things to sell. I had dreamt of having my own sewing shop for quite some time, and then at the beginning of this year (2020) finally decided that it was only going to happen if I made it so.

Crafty Girl Maria is run from my home in Horley, Surrey (in the UK). I have a small team of 2, Lorraine and Margaret, who help manage the orders. Lorraine runs her own craft groups and Margaret crochets in her spare time.

I aim to seek out a wide range of colourful modern and affordable fabrics, as well as offering all the basic essentials of sewing and crafting. I stock many big names such as Tilly and the Buttons, Tilda, Vilene/Vlieseline, Hemline, Riley Blake, Bosal, Groves and Trimits. I also love seeking out wonderful gifts and beautiful sewing accessories.

I understand how confusing it can be to know which products you need, so I'm happy to help you. Also if you can't find what you are looking for, I'm happy to look into whether I can get it for you from one of my many stockists.

My team and I are working hard to fulfil orders during this difficult time with the Covid 19 pandemic. I'm still happy to give one-to-one sewing tuition (where permitted) and hope to see group workshops back up and running early next year, so watch this space!
