PDF Insulated Milk Bottle Box/Carrier Sewing Pattern

Keep your milk bottles cool in this practical and simple insulated box. Includes a handle to help you bring the milk in.

I love getting my milk delivered to my door every other day. It's more environmentally friendly as we are buying less plastic and the milk bottles are returned for reuse. However, I was getting frustrated at my milk being too warm in the summer and therefore going off really quickly. Although when I was a young child the milkman used to deliver very early in the morning, so it was lovely and fresh when you woke; these days milk deliveries tend to be done later night. Often our milkman (or is it milk person) delivers around midnight, meaning on warm summer nights it is not as fresh and cool as I would like.

Therefore I designed a simple insulated milk bottle carrier that can be left on your doorstep ready for your milkman to fill. If it's really warm, there is also space to place a freezer pack inside. It is wipe clean, with a hook and loop easy close lid and carry handle.

Your finished milk bottle carrier will measure 20 cm high by 18 cm wide and 17 cm deep (excluding the handle).

You will be buying the PDF instructions to make this carrier and will not be receiving the carrier itself. Alternatively you can purchase my insulated milk bottle carrier/box kit which includes all of the supplies you need to make one carrier and printed instructions.

You will need the following materials to make your insulated box:

  • Light to medium weight cotton or oilcloth fabric for the outer - half a yard/metre*
  • If you are using cotton outer fabric, you will need 2 m/yard Vlieseline Lamifix, otherwise if you have oilcloth, you will need 1m metre/yard.
  • Thermal backed fleece - half a metre/yard (62 inch wide).
  • Thermolam compressed fleece - half a metre/yard (90 cm wide).
  • Heavy weight interfacing (I recommend Vlieseline H250) - 40 cm x 10 cm strip.
  • Matching threads
  • 5 cm/2 cm wide hook and loop tape (both sides) – 16 cm.
  • Fabric pen
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Fabric clips (if you don’t have any, just make sure you place your pins within the seam allowance).
  • Sewing machine
  • Optional: cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Walking foot (ideally).
